Today is capstone day 17 and tomorrow's the last day of capstone- I'm pretty bummed. This has been such an amazing opportunity for me to do what I love and share my passions with others.
Anyways, tomorrow is my first day at my internship with Rean Cloud, an Amazon Web Services partner. I am super excited and have been reviewing cloud material all day! Mycloudguru is an awesome resource incase you are interested in that stuff. Sidenote: Cupcakes 'n Code made it in the school yearbook! The legacy lives on!!

Capstone day 16 and i'm out here doing some creative stuff! So, when I was thinking about how to decorate my grad cap, I wanted to do something original and realized that I could code led lights to animate my grad cap during the commencement ceremony.
I spent all day coding led lights and using a wooden frame as a boundary since I don't actually have my physical grad cap yet. I will definitely post an update with my finished cap and maybe a tutorial about how I did it! This is kind of a trial and error project, so we'll see how it turns out! Through this journey with Cupcakes 'n Code, I have realized how much more I have to learn. Yes, I am proficient in a few programming languages, Java, Python, HTML, Swift, etc.- however, I need to apply this knowledge to practical applications.
Today, I created my website tanyaravi.com using HTML and worked on it all day. I am planning to add a lot more features to it, right now, it is just a brief introduction of myself! Maybe for my next Cupcakes 'n Code workshop I can teach girls how to make a simple website? Even though it is Sunday and I shouldn't be doing work, I am going to count this as capstone day 14 of capstone! Look at this heartwarming email I received today from a mom of one of the girls who attended?! It is so sweet and i definitely teared up a bit while reading.
I realized that although this was a community service oriented capstone, it started to evolve into a self improvement capstone- because, these girls changed me more than I changed them. Everyone always says teaching is the best way to learn a subject and this has done exactly that. This capstone has helped me realize just how valuable knowledge is and to share the knowledge that you have been given. It's capstone day 13, but more importantly- it's Cupcakes 'n Code workshop day!
Today's event went amazingly! It was just the right level of difficulty where the girls were being challenged but also didn't need hands on help 75% of the time. I am so happy with today's turnout. I got this cute little group picture with the girls that stayed a little after the event for extra cupcakes :) It's capstone day 12 and today I did monotonous preparation things such as purchase cupcakes, plates and napkins. I also visited the Gum Spring Library room to set up for for Cupcakes ‘n Code workshop tomorrow!
I am so excited but also feeling a bit sad, because this is the last Cupcakes 'n Code event for the capstone period :( I hope everything goes as planned! Hey, hey capstone day 11! Today I completely finished the lesson plan for Cupcakes ‘n Code workshop on the 27th. It is a python introduction, which seems intimidating but I know the girls will have a fantastic time doing it! I have also been promote the event heavily via social media by asking my mom to post it in the South Riding moms running group!
Sorry for the quick blog posts, I have been playing tennis almost everyday since our team made it into the post-season. Wish us luck!
It's day 10 my dudes! Today I started creating a lesson plan for the Cupcakes ‘n Code workshop on the 27th. The main purpose of the lesson is to essentially teach the girls Python coding. This is a bit scary for me because I am not as proficient in Python as I am in Java. I have been coding Java for 3 full years at this point, I have merely taken a few online crash courses dealing with Python over the past year.
I know that I am underestimating what I know and all I have to teach is very surface level introductions, I can't help but feel just a little jittery about it. Hopefully it all turns out well. Oh yeah, and I put together stickers and swag bags for the event. I kind of want to save some swag for myself. Capstone day 9- this is going by so fast! Today I began by advertising for the Cupcakes ‘n Code event on the 27th. I decided to utilize Facebook to spread the word about my workshop. You might be wondering, how many parents of small children follow you on Facebook? None- that's exactly the point, by posting on my community Facebook group, many parents can see and can show it to show their friends! I have had so much more website interaction after posting it, this is exciting.
Also, I started another project which is working on programming my own personal website called tanyaravi.com, please check it out! Heyooo- it's day 8! Today feels boring to blog about because it was so similar to last Monday, but it really wasn't as boring as it seems. So basically what I did was reserve a meeting room in Gum Spring Library for Cupcakes ‘n Code on the 27th, the 12-2 time period that I booked last week was filled for this Saturday but I found out that the people who booked it didn't show up to their last meeting. Knowing this, I contacted the library who revoked their booking and allowed me to have the room this week as well! So happy that I got the same time so that more people will show up.
Also, I created a registration form for the Cupcakes ‘n Code workshop on the 27th. Lastly, I brainstormed Cupcakes ‘n Code workshop ideas: so far I have introduction to HTML, Python or C++. I wonder which one kids will be most interested in. |
